Perhaps no writer influenced me more in my childhood than Ray Bradbury. Before I actually read The Martian Chronicles, I read illustrated versions of his work in EC Comics. I got to the book when I was ten and continued reading him until well after college. He shaped what interests me and he influenced my writing. His “novels” were actually short stories, cleverly stitched together. It’s a technique I think of often as a blogger.

I was sad to see him die, even at the age of 91 and after a career of writing and speaking for over 60 years. He must have found it ironic that many of the years he wrote about “far into the future” came and went. More interesting is that the technologies to take humans into space have become so much of a reality.

Technology is catching up with our scifi writers. And the implications are very, very complex. Many people, including me, are uncomfortable with some of the implications, but technology is relentless in pushing us beyond where we already are and it will not stop.

Goodbye, Mr. Bradbury. Thanks for everything you did for me.
